Get to know that
Oldonyo Lengai is the Maasai ‘Mountain of God’ and is
an active volcano located on the Rift Valley escarpment near the
border with Kenya. The climb is undertaken at night to avoid the
crippling heat of the day and to witness the awesome sight of the
sunrise over the Rift Valley. This is not an easy climb with scree
patches, steep slopes and a sulphurous stench to accompany you but
the views are outstanding and it is easy to understand why the volcano
has a spiritual status.
Lake Natron is located at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai and has a
desolate and lunaresque beauty. Short walks take you to streams
and waterfalls and there is good birdlife including flocks of flamingos.
