DAY 1: Arrive Entebbe airport. Meet, greet and start for Fort Portal via the pretty little town of Mubende set in rolling hills. Choice of a brief stop at Nakayima Shrine, a splendid tree known to be 400 years old, worshipped by local people and thought to be holding the spirit of an ancient king. Lunch en route and continue to Kibale. Arrive late afternoon. Relax at lodge or explore nearby Crater Lake. [Approximate driving time: 6 hours].
Overnight: Ndali Lodge/Kibale Mantana Camp
Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2: A guided nature walk in Kibale Forest, which has the highest number of primates in Africa - including red, black and white colobus, blue monkeys and baboons and a large number of chimpanzees. A forest walk provides a high possibility of seeing and hearing the noisy chimps and other primates playing around through the forest. Birdlife is also fabulous, with over 300 species recorded in the forest. An afternoon walk in Bigodi wetland gives the opportunity of seeing the unusual birds, baboons, chimps and other primates, which live, around the swamp.
Overnight: Ndali Lodge/Mantana Kibale Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: Start for Queen Elizabeth National Park. Set in the western branch of the Great Rift Valley, the park is incredibly diverse in the type of terrain it encompasses. Prehistoric volcanic explosion craters now serve as huge amphitheatres across the floor of which troop herds of Elephant and Buffalo. Some of these craters have formed salt lakes in which Flamingo from as far away as Kenya are scattered like delicate pink dust. Wide-open plains support fair numbers of game, both prey and predator. The two large lakes that bound the park - Edward and George, together with the connecting Kazinga Channel are home to large numbers of Hippo, and numerous Crocodile. Arrive at Mweya Lodge, dramatically located on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Edward and provides excellent views of the Kazinga Channel. Enjoy the first game drive in the evening. [Approximate driving time: 4 hours].
Overnight: Mweya Safari Lodge/Jacana Lodge

The chimp population is quite mobile and viewing is unpredictable but the walk is enchanting. Alternatively go for a nature walk in Maramagambo Forest to see other primates and to visit the bat cave and the blue lake. In the afternoon take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel where the wildlife and a vast array of birds come to drink.
Overnight: Mweya Safari Lodge/Jacana Lodge
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 5: An early morning game drive, time permitting. Lunch en route, arriving late afternoon. Transfer to the airport for your flight. [Approximate driving time: 6 hours].
Tour Ends.

Gorillas and Chimps and Wildlife

This safari starts and finishes in Entebbe/Kampala. The gorilla permit in Bwindi is included in the safari cost.
This Ugandan adventure takes us to three national parks, and allows you to experience up close these magnificent animals.
Kibale Forest - Kibale Forest has the highest number of primates in Africa - thirteen species in all, including red, black and white colobus, blue monkeys and baboons and a large number of chimpanzees. A forest walk provides a high possibility of seeing and hearing the vast number of chimps and other primates playing and jumping around through the forest. With over 300 bird species recorded in the forest, Kibale boasts of many rewarding experiences not thought of in some other forests of Africa. An excursion to Bigodi and Magombe wetlands gives the opportunity of seeing the unusual birds, chimps, baboons, monkeys and other primates, which live around the swamp. Money paid for Bigodi and Magombe goes directly to the local communities.
Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives, boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, chimpanzee tracking, bush walks.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla tracking - Seeing some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a fantastic experience. This safari takes you tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi has four habituated families and the gorillas there live in thicker tropical forest and tracking is more challenging as the hillsides are steeper. You can also go for nature walks to see birds, monkeys and orchids.
Lake Mburo National Park for game viewing.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe airport. Meet, greet and start for Fort Portal via the pretty little town of Mubende set in rolling hills. Day 2: This 766-square-kilometer tropical rain forest is the natural habitat for an amazing 12 primate species, and contains the highest primate density of an area on Earth. Here, on a guided forest walk, you may find families of Chimpanzees and Red Colobus Monkeys chattering and swinging through the ancient forest trees. Some of the trees are 50 to 60 meters (150 to 180 feet) in height, and provide a majestic canopy for the profusion of rain forest life, including 325 bird species. Even though you may only rarely see them, the park is home to the largest population of Forest Elephant in Uganda, and is also home to Buffalo, Uganda Kob, Genet, Civet, Waterbuck and Bushbuck. Take a guided walk through this fascinating forest, following the well-marked trails. After lunch visit a nearby forest swamp that is excellent for viewing more primates and other forest animals.

Overnight: Bwindi Gorilla Resort
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6/7: These two days activities may be amongst the most exciting and challenging of the entire expedition. The Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi are part of a worldwide population of just 600 individuals. The gorillas are by no means tame, and are completely wild animals. However, experienced guides accompany you on tracking, many of who have been involved in the habituation process themselves. The guides use their knowledge of the gorillas’ habits and information from the previous day to locate the group’s whereabouts.
Time taken to track the gorillas varies enormously, from as little as half an hour to as much as 9 hours. Once the gorillas are located, one is allowed a maximum of one hour with the gorillas. This is one of the world’s truly memorable experiences - a look into one of these magnificent creatures’ eyes brings home the bond that exists between them and us. The hour is often over all too quickly!

Day 8: Travel eastwards to Lake Mburo National Park. After lunch in Mbarara, drive to the park and check into your camp. Enjoy an evening game drive to view the parks plains, game species and birds, followed by a return to the camp to freshen up for dinner. [Approximate driving time: 5 hours]
Overnight: Lake Mburo Tented Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Early morning game drive and return to Entebbe. Lunch. Afternoon at leisure. Transfer to the airport for your return flight. [Approximate driving time: 4 hours].

Follow the trail along the Mubuku River, through landslides and up and down rocks and bluffs. Cross the Mahoma River and climb steeply through bracken fern slopes and
Podocarpus forest to Nyabitaba Hut for overnight.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 3: To John Matte Hut (3350m). The trail from Nyabitaba drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers. A steep ascent through bamboo forest, traversing a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From Nyamileju rock shelter, on clear days, Mts Stanley and Speke can be glimpsed before passing into the zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. The final stretch to the hut is across a tiring bog, the first of many for which the mountain is infamous.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 4: To Bujuku Hut (3900m). Immediately after John Matte Hut, the trail drops down to cross the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, home of giant lobelias. Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed but rarely without the feet sampling some of the freezing ooze below. The Upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut, well located for climbing Mts Baker and Speke, is set in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass and even for the Rwenzoris it can be cold.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

DAY 5: To Elena Hut (4541m). Leaving Bujuku, through more bog, the trail climbs the slopes west of the lake, passing through the magical Groundsel Gully as it ascends to Scott-Elliot Pass at 4372m. At the head of the gully a metal ladder takes you over a steep section after which the trail branches, the right leads up to Elena Hut and Mt Stanley over a steep rocky trail, while the left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes. The Elena Hut, at the base of the Stanley Glacier, depending on the weather and individual’s acclimatisation, is about a three hour walk from the summit of Margherita.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

DAY 6: For those who wish, climb the peak up to Margherita (5109m) and later down to Kitandara Hut (4023m). Climb on to the glacier, moving on to the Stanley Plateau. Subject to altitude sickness, fog and weather, scramble up to the summit of Margherita, crown of the Rwenzoris. Crampons and roping up may well be necessary. Not everyone will make it so do not be disappointed if you don't. Returning to Scott-Elliot pass, there are spectacular views back to Bujuku Lake and Mt Speke, up to Mt Stanley and down to the Kitandara Lakes. Once over the pass the trail enters an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and rough boulders. Descend to the Kitandara Hut for overnight, past the Kitandara Lakes. (For those who do not wish to climb the peak, a more restful day walking from Elena Hut to Kitandara.)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

DAY 7: To Guy Yeoman Hut (3260m). From Kitandara, the trail ascends steeply up the headwall, spreading out from the base of Mt Baker and continuing along the south side of the mountain to Fresh field Pass. On a clear day there are views into the Congo to the west and Mt Stanley to the north. From the pass, the long muddy descent continues, passing the rock shelter at Bujangolo, the base camp for the historic expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

DAY 8: To Nyabitaba (2650m). The path down can be slippery and muddy with little to hold on to and requires careful balancing over the vertical mud or steep rock. An overnight stop at the Nyabitaba Hut is a pleasant rest after the exertion of recent days.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

DAY 9: To Nyakalengija trailhead (1600m). A gentle descent down the muddy paths to the trailhead, arriving late morning. Lunch in Kasese. Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, game viewing on the way. A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. Time permitting, short evening game drive.
Overnight: Mweya/Jacana
