Katavi National Park, Chimpanzee tracking in Mahale the relaxation on Lupita Island on Lake Tanganyika Itinerary
Day 0 Thusday. After arriving Kilimanjaro International Airport you will met our driver who will pick you to Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge for Dinner and overnight
Day 01 Friday -04: Arusha-Katavi National Park
After an early breakfast at our overnight lodge we are transferred to the Arusha airport for an 8 o'clock take-off. Our scheduled-charter flight to Katavi National Park from Arusha takes us across almost the whole width of Tanzania, passing by the Ngorongoro Highlands to our north as we fly westwards. On arrival in Katavi we will be met and transferred to one of luxury tented, Palahala Tented Camp, Katavi Wildlife Camp or Katume Tented Camp, where we will base ourselves for four nights.
Daily activities out of your selection Camp will revolve around obtaining the very best that this remote and truly wild national park can provide. Generally we will awaken before first light and head out on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles with a maximum of 5 passengers to a vehicle, returning later in the morning for a well deserved and wholesome brunch. A midday siesta may then be enjoyed before we gather again for our afternoon tea followed by the evening excursion, once more venturing out in 4x4 vehicles and returning at nightfall.
Katavi is a place of surprises, as wild Africa usually is. Every drive we took turned up something new and exciting, and our anticipation at the start of every outing was heightened by the sense that we were heading into the unknown.
05 - 07 - Mahale
After our morning activity at Camp we will transfer to the airstrip for our charter flight across the mountains to the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Upon landing we and our baggage will be transferred to boats and we will begin the approximately one hour journey down the lake to Nkungwe Tented Camp. The camp nestles in a sandy cove on the lakeshore, beneath towering verdant mountains, in a setting bound to evoke "oohs and aahs" on arrival!
Nkungwe Tented Camp has one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations of any camp in East Africa, sitting on a white sandy beach at the base of the 8000 ft Mahale Mountains overlooking the turquoise waters of Lake Tanganyika. It's a four hour flight from Arusha and, the best bit, it's quite simply beyond the reach of any wheeled vehicle.
Rounding Nkungwe Tented Camp bay by dhow in the twilight, to see the camp lit up with kerosene lanterns is something you just don't tire of (particularly when you've been plied with drinks on the dhow on your journey down the lake).
The camp is small (only 6 spectacular A-frame chalets made from old dhows and local materials set up under the palms at the back of the beach) has real charisma and manages to combine great style and fun with a serious and ecologically sound approach to operating - no unnecessary concrete or generators, and all structures built of biodegradable materials. It's staffed by a small crew of highly motivated Tongwe people - the local tribe. They're incredibly good at what they do, so although this is actually quite a simple camp, it is suffused with a seductive natural opulence and you want for absolutely nothing. Ultimately, the camp is as much of an experience as the chimps.
Great food, including fresh fish from the lake, an extensive bar and a large and eclectic selection of books are all part of the experience. Meals are served either in the main mess, set on the beach no more than 50 yards from the waters edge, or in the open air under the stars at night by the waters edge.
Daily activities at Nkungwe Tented Camp will revolve around chimpanzee trekking (2 treks per person) and boating on the lake. Unlike most safari destinations, crack-o-dawn starts are not necessary, as the trackers first venture out into the forest to locate the chimpanzees while we indulge in a leisurely breakfast. Once the chimps have been located a short boat ride usually takes us to our stepping off point for the hike into the hills, and our encounter with our closest primate relatives.
Park regulations limit us to an hour in the company of the chimpanzees, but these hours will be among the most full you will ever experience. Once our time with the great apes is up we will hike back to the lakeshore and return to camp by boat (unless we are closer to camp, when a walk back to camp through the forest may be in order.)
The afternoon will be spent snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the lake, boating and bird-watching along its shores, fishing if you are an enthusiast (or even a beginner trying your luck) or simply lazing on the white sands of the beach and swimming in the warm blue waters of the lake.
Nkungwe Camp is perhaps one of the most serene and relaxing safari camps in Africa, with a setting that is perfect for relaxation...or romance! The camp has a well-stocked library, as well as plenty of nooks and crannies in which to while away the leisure hours.
The day's activities may be reversed, depending upon the number of guests in camp, with only 6 guests permitted to visit the chimps at a time. Chimp treks thus take place in the morning after breakfast and the afternoons after lunch, and guests will undertake one or the other on a rotational basis.
Day 8. Fridays-After Morning breakfast fly from Mahale to Kipili then take Boat to Lupita Island for your relaxation days,
Day 9: Satarday-11. There are three activities, which are Fishing, spa, Snorkeling and Boat Cruises so that you will select every day which you want to do in each day Dinner and overnight you stay in Lupita Luxury Tented.
Day 12 Tuesday. After a full morning's activities we will transfer by boat back to the airstrip for our scheduled-charter flight back to Arusha, arriving there about 18h30. On arrival we will be transferred to our overnight lodgings for the night or to take your International flight.
